Vintage | A.G.Almond | Downing College Cambridge | Magenta Purple Tie | Griffins Club Varsity | 1940s

This is a beautiful piece of vintage British academic history. This is an authentic mid-century varsity club tie from Downing College, Cambridge, dating back to around the 1940s I think.  It features Downing’s signature magenta and black stripes, accented with a repeating embroidered griffin motif. This is an official piece from Downing’s historic sporting society, The Griffins Club. Made in Cambridge by the legendary academic tailors and robe makers, A.G. Almond Ltd. (you can see their beautiful original woven tag still attached inside). Feels like a high-quality, heavy woven silk or silk blend typical of old-school university tailoring, but I am not certain of its fabric.
